ROTA ACHIEVEMENTS

Introduction

Despite having only been formally established in September 2005, Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) has accomplished numerous achievements in its relatively short existence. Significant ROTA milestones include:

  • Raised more than USD28 million through our fundraising efforts
  • Responded to the earthquake in Pakistan in October, 2005, by immediately sending relief supplies to affected areas
  • Organized our first volunteer trip to Pakistan, taking 65 students from seven different schools in Qatar to share their knowledge with children whose lives were changed by the earthquake
  • Equipped40 schools in southern Lebanon which had been damaged during the 2006 crisis, benefiting more than 8,000 students
  • Implemented the Atfalouna - Our Children campaign between August 2006 and March 2007, encouraging the schoolchildren of Qatar to fundraise for their counterparts in Lebanon
  • Fully furnished and equipped a Learning Center in Lamreh, Aceh, an area devastated by the 2005 Tsunami. More than 260 students will have access to over 1,500 books, plus the opportunity to participate in after school activities and use interactive learning tools
  • Reconstructed and fully furnished a primary and secondary school in Bayat Klaten, destroyed by an earthquake in May 2006, providing access to education for over 1000 students. This ongoing project also focuses on a five-year education program to upgrade the curriculum and conduct workshops and training for teachers and students.
  • Completed the first phase of our project in Pakistan; the reconstruction of 7 semi-permanent schools (3 primary schools and 4 middle schools) and the building of library facilities for each. Now in the second phase, we are building and fully furnishing 10 permanent schools and conducting teacher training to enhance the quality of education in those schools. The project provides access to quality education for over 1636 students and 100 teachers in the Kashmir district
  • Lead a team of 143 volunteer students and teachers from Qatar to undertake community service at a school in Java, Indonesia
  • Together with some of the world's leading universities based at Qatar's Education City, established a Knowledge Network which provides first class educational resources to developing communities within Asia
  • In Cambodia, we have begun a project to expand a primary and secondary school and provide a vocational training centre in the area of Vihear Suork Commune in Kandal province. Over 2,750 students will be provided with access to primary and secondary education. The vocational training will benefit the under-skilled and underemployed young people in the area and in the neighboring districts of Kampong Cham and Prey Veng provinces.
